University of Kashmir: An Example of Collective Mess

Getting admission in any University for a postgraduate course/degree is the ultimate dream of any student pursuing studies in any subject from any college, and every student considers a University as “Kaba” of the education system. When a student leaves his/her home for University to join classes, they might be feeling on top of the world, without minding weather after spending a couple of years of their prime youth they got a job for their livelihood or will have to join several lac others in the queue of unemployed. This sojourn of the years in a University has its twists and turns which are centered around self-discovery and self-reliance, and may be in turn shape up the student`s general outlook on the dynamics of life.
Many among the newly enrolled students are not usually prepared for the possible challenges that university life has to offer, hence causing them to get overwhelmed. The aftermath of such a situation are students taking valuable extra time to try and adjust to this new life? However, as much as all these facts are a reality that students have to face, one can have the upper hand if adequate preparation is made beforehand. While time spent at university is a fond memory and a happy experience for most, university life is not without its rough patches. Every student’s situation is unique, but there are a few problems that almost all university students deal with at least once during their time at school.
In Jammu & Kashmir the students after getting admission to postgraduate courses in the oldest University in Hazratbal, many a times feel their hopes crashed when they have to face the man made issues and problems, especially created by the employees and officers. The biggest curse being experienced is the lack of spirit in the administration in employing hi-tech innovation and mobility in the higher education department, especially in the Kashmir University. The students, who are enrolled in different departments or, are connected to it through the affiliation of their respective colleges and courses, are the victims to face the unjustifiable soft arrogance to delay the handling of issues pertaining to the students, who have to travel from far-flung areas for the resolution of minor or major issues related to their admissions, subjects, labs or libraries. The officials handling these affairs instead of extending a helping hand, exhibit the expressions of superiority to avoid the victims and make them to visit again and again.
A student from Boniyar in Uri area told this correspondent that he is pursuing his Bachelor’s degree from Degree College in Uri, but for corrections in his registration, he had to visit the University campus about 4 times. He added that on 2 occasions, the concerned official was not available in the office and on third time he was over busy to entertain him, so had to come again 4th time to get the correction in his University Registration.
The process of official work in the entire world including India has changed dramatically from old manual medium to the digital age. Innovation and learning are integrated to enhance the experience of students and faculty. Cloud, mobile and digital technologies are accelerating educational transformation in colleges and Universities around the world. In majority of Universities, even in tiny countries or cities, the administrative systems have been shifted to digital system, but in Kashmir University, though the students do upload information and documents online, but are forced to queue for filing of hard copies of these formats and documents.
Educators are burdened with manual admission process and experiencing stress and confusion while making important decisions. This can blur the rankings of colleges and universities. It probably makes sense to understand the impact of technology empowered smart admissions process, especially automation in admissions, and rankings in educational institutions. It is important to correlate the success of smart colleges and students with smart admission management system. If you’re paying attention to an automated student admission system, you’re caring enough to do something for college success.
Paper-based processes blows the applicant’s chances of admission. Manual admission process is time-consuming, highly stressful and error prone. The existing application process is so time-consuming that a large number of students miss the deadlines for college applications. We talked with numerous students at Kashmir university regarding the issue of submission of hardcopies in university or their departments . One of the student namely Zehra Syed says, “We have to reach university whatever the circumstances be ,they never co-operate with the students, despite of unfavorable situations in the valley, and are always in haste while attending the aspirants or others, behaving authoritatively to discourage them with a harsh impression”. Tahmeena Ali, another student said, ”They must simplify our admission or any other process via digital format by customizable online integration on any website” and added furtherI”it can efficiently manage the entire admission process using cutting-edge tools for easy online application submission and improve interactions via email, messaging, SMS alerts and push notifications from mobile devices”.
We encountered many students, who told us that the cost of education is touching alarming levels, ever since the most recent increase in the cost of higher education, the number of students seeking professional counseling has significantly increased. Mental health issues are surfacing more than ever in students. Most students are paying their education expenses themselves so the pressure on them to get good grades is immense. Even if it is not them paying, there are still massive social and educational repercussions of not succeeding in the studies. Many students who had opted for educational loan facility from banks and after completion of their studies are not getting jobs and their parents are facing the heat of banks for adjustment of their bank dues. A few enrolled students told our correspondent that, there are many who tried to point out the depressing areas to the top administration, to fix them, but the officials always behaved rudely and not a single example is in sight, where the administration tried to plug the holes.
The employees in different departments or in the administrative block are making flimsy excuses regarding the lack of work culture or inefficiency in the system. It’s not possible for all students daily or twice a week for submission of applications for admission or any other issue, but they are forced to beg, borrow or steal the resources to follow the imprudent dictates. “We are living in digital world still paper work, or travelling long distances for mere submission of applications, seeking information is nothing but the foolishness, as everything can be done in minutes via digital platforms” said an angry student who was made to visit the office 7 times to get the certificates. This attitude of administration in Kashmir University has caused anxiety and depression among many students, who are now seen the queue’s of mental health centers. The increasing arrogance among the teaching and non-teaching staff in Kashmir University is taking its toll, instead of imparting moral and traditional learning. The one important reason for the deterioration in the system is government ignoring its supervisory role, thus allowing the unethical approach meted to the future of the Nation.
