Clashes break out in Pulwama

Pulwama, May 15: Massive clashes erupted in Rahmoo area in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Friday afternoon, reports and officials told GNS.

They said that scores of people took to streets and staged a protest in Rahmoo for not allowing them to offer prayers. They said when the sale of liquor was allowed in outside states “why are we not being allowed to discharge our religious obligation to offer prayers in mosques.”

The police and CRPF deployment tried to disperse them by firing teargas canisters. The protesters hurled stones at the deployments, triggering clashes. The police and CRPF men also resorted to pellet firing to disperse the protesters, they said. When reports last came in, the protests were going on. There were no reports so far about injury to any person in the clashes.

Meanwhile, some people also hurled stones at the vehicles of CRPF near Muran while they were heading towards Rahmoo, they added. (GNS)

However, Refuting the claims that the protests at Ruhmo, Pulwama were against barring Friday prayers in the masjids , Police said that the shopkeepers has opened shops despite the area having been declared as “Red Zone.” SSP Pulwama told that the Concerned Tehsildar had gone to the area and asked shopkeepers to down the shutters prompting protests. He said since the area was a “Red Zone”, therefore people have been advised to excercise caution .
“It wasnt about prayers. Its about saving own communituy. Shops were open which Tehsildar asked them to close as Rohmu is red zone.”SSP told.
