MAINTAIN THE SANCTITY OF EDUCATION

In every bad, fragile or worst situation, our education system is always the first causality.  On 5th August last year when Government of India abrogated the Article 370 and 35A, downgraded one of the most beautiful states of India, the Jammu & Kashmir into 2 Union territories of Ladakh and J & K. The natives  of Jammu & Kashmir especially the Kashmir region had to pass through the worst ever hardships as the government imposed toughest ever restrictions with the complete communication gag, with no mobile, landline and no internet facilities all across the Union Territory with all educational institutions closed. Students were clueless, as they were clueless about their classes, studies, exams and the future course of action. The announcement came as a bombshell and people got engaged to fetch for their livelihood and insecurity of their kin outside Jammu & Kashmir as nobody was able to communicate with each other, as such the education was seen as last priority. Since thousands of medical emergencies could not reach to hospitals or doctors and many of them succumbed due to non-availability of medical aid, the students of all ages and classes too got busy in the prioritized domestic chorus to survive. During the government enforced first phase of lockdown to avoid any kind of political turmoil on the streets, no option was given to the student community for continuity of studies, however it was later when the most countries of the world had to go Kashmir way because of Coronavirus or Covid-19, the concept of work from home and online classes was introduced. The educational institutions in Kashmir took longer than usual time to understand this method of study, but finally the students were wooed to online classes. However, the students in Kashmir had already lost their precious 8 months with the mechanism of mass promotion in 2019.

Since the student community had got deviated from their studies for about 8 months in view of the lockdown following abrogation of Article 370 35 A, so it was very difficult for them to get back to their studies suddenly that through an unusual format.  Now, although the online classes are now seen crowdie but many students maintain presence only but stay aloof from studies. It is observed that average 30-40% students use proxies in class and final tests with the intention of passing the exams only. In this cheating in most of the cases parents, siblings and friends are gladly helping them.

The parents have to understand that this kind of cheating is not going to benefit their wards but will turn them into habitual cheaters. We, despite having a 30 years history of bloodiest turmoil on our land have produced thousands of sparkling youngsters who made their presence felt in all the spheres of competitive exams and are now touching skies. But, the students and the parents must know that by resorting to these unethical methods to pass exams in the longer run will ruin their career and in woes of earning livelihood. The sons of the soil who shined in National or international competitions confined their attention honestly to their studies only and did not opt for short cuts to pass exams. The teachers, the parents and the students need to be counseled to uphold the sanctity of the learning and not the mechanism of passing exams with short cuts and cheating, then only we can hope for an honest society otherwise we will never come out of the depressing corrupt system prevailing around us.
